Don't Neglect Your Rest

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God' for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

- Hebrews 4:10,11

Summer is a time for rest. People go on vacations. They engage in all sorts of recreational activities. The regular work schedule lightens or changes. Even the church calendar "lights up" a bit.

The Lord Jesus offers and gives us rest throughout the whole year. It is the rest we have in Jesus, in the forgiveness of sins, in the promise of heaven and eternal life. The rest we have in our Christian faith points us to the eternal rest we will have in heaven. There we will rest from the struggles we have in temptations, sin and guilt.

It is in our worship service - the preaching of repentance and the forgiveness of sins, and receiving of the Lord's Supper that we receive the rest of faith and forgiveness. Coming to church is a vacation for our souls. This summer, let's not get so busy "resting" our bodies that we don't make time for resting our souls. We all need our rest and the Lord Jesus has made sure that we had it.
